Belgian Chicago Luncheon Series: "Risk management at financial institutions: where did it fail, and what’s next?"

Dear Alumni,

Where did risk management across the financial industry fall short? Can we identify some root causes of the failure of the systems in place? More important, what are possible systemic solutions to avoid a similar meltdown in the future while safeguarding economic growth and financial innovation?

The subject has been widely discussed in the press and is still a hot topic in international politics and within regulatory bodies worldwide.

As part of our Chicago Luncheon series we are pleased to offer our alumni a unique opportunity to have an insightful debate on risk management presided by a seasoned industry insider and academic, Prof. Dr. Stefan Duchateau, who witnessed the shortfalls of the existing risk management systems from the inside as previous CEO of KBC Asset Management.

In combination with his academic expertise as a professor in Advanced Risk Management and Advanced Portfolio Management at EHSAL, and professor Risk Management at the VUB-Solvay Master Program and of Portfolio Management at the KU Leuven, Prof. Dr. Stefan Duchateau is uniquely positioned to discuss the topic with us on January 19 at De Warande.

Mr. Duchateau is a reference in the Belgian financial industry. Under his leadership, KBC was the first to introduce the capital guaranteed fund (the “Click” Fund) in Belgium. He transformed KBC Asset Management into the European leader in the segment of structured retail products. Overall, over the last 10 years assets under management increased by a factor 15 to € 160 billion!

Currently, Mr. Duchateau holds positions as president of the board in several investment management companies in Belgium, Luxemburg, Ireland, and Central Europe. He also works as an independent management consultant for a selection of industry players, amongst which Argenta Bank and Insurance Group, the world’s leading diamant trader Rosy Blue NV, Mensura Insurance Co, several government bodies and major pension funds.
Please join us in what promises to be a unique round table debate with an inspiring leader and speaker.

Chicago Luncheon with Professor Paul De Grauwe on December 9, 12 p.m.-2 p.m., Château Sainte-Anne

Chicago Booth Luncheon Series – 2009-2010 Edition

Dear Alumni,

Are markets still efficient? Those of you who still have the “Foundations of Finance” from Eugene Fama in mind will realize how fundamentally this question touches the core of the Chicago School thinking, while at the same time we all observe how the efficiency paradigm is under scrutiny these days –and not only in the academic world.

We are therefore pleased to devote our next Chicago luncheon to this topic. On December 9, Professor Paul De Grauwe (KUL) will join us for an insightful discussion on “Capital market efficiency: time for a new paradigm?”, including his view on potential policy implications.  Professor De Grauwe is one of the prominent economists in Europe, professor at KUL and previously economist at IMF, senior research fellow at CEPS, Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin, Visiting scholar at the Board of Governors of the FED, Senator at the Belgian Parliament, Wim Duisenberg fellow at the European Central Bank and others. For many years he specialized in the field of international monetary economics, where he was known as one of the strong defenders of the market efficiency theorem. However, back in the late eighties he already started looking for other phenomena that could explain the often erratic exchange rate movements. As such, he was one of the pioneers of the academic research on deterministic chaos in the dynamic behaviour of exchange rates – away from pure stochastic behaviour.

Recently, he became increasingly convinced of the existence of non-rational elements that influence the behaviour of investors and hence financial markets.

Having him amongst us for an informal discussion on capital market efficiency therefore promises to become an insightful and rewarding experience.

Broaden your horizon and join TEDx - a truly exceptional not-for-profit event - November 23, 2009 at the European Parliament

TEDx Brussels

Welcomes you at the European Parliament, Brussels

BURN THE BOX

Monday, November 23, 2009

TEDx is an event where some  of  the  world’s  leading  thinkers  and  doers  are  invited  to  share  what  they  are  most  passionate  about. ‘TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design – three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. The diverse

Audience consisting of CEOs,  politicians, inventors, scientists,  creatives,  marketers,  philanthropists  and more is  almost  as  extraordinary  as  the  speakers,  who  have  included  Bill  Clinton,  Bill  Gates,  Frank  Gehry,  Paul  Simon,  Sir  Richard  Branson,  Philippe  Starck  and  Bono.

TEDx is an offshoot of TED and is a programme of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share ideas worth spreading. TEDx Brussels will feature video streams and live speakers including Nicholas Negroponte, Nirj Deva, Dambisa Moyo, Paddy Ashdown, Pedro Brugada, Marc Van Montagu, Conrad Wolfram, Catherine Verfaillie and Peter Schaeferall looking to spark off new networks and discussions in the European capital.

The theme of the event is “Burn the Box”: The EU is the world’s largest donor of official development assistance. Its objective is the  eradication of poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).  But the problem only gets bigger.  Africa is at the same  time  the  most  promising  and  the  least  fortunate  continent.  A billion people deadlocked in time. TEDx Brussels salutes free spirits who do not watch from the sidelines or just think out of the box, but are ready to “BURN THE BOX”.

We would like to invite you to register for the first TEDx Brussels on http://www.tedxbrussels.eu and be part of an event which the attendees have called “the ultimate brain spa”.

See http://www.tedxbrussels.eu for more details.

If you are not yet familiar with TED, please do also have a look at the www.TED.com and watch one of the 18minute (no longer) worldwide talks;  ranging from world’s best scientist, artist and business leaders to ‘ordinary people’ with remarkable achievements. At the TEDx event you will also experience that the audience is as important as the speakers on stage, hence a lot of interaction will be happening: selected audience members will have a chance to present on stage for 6 minutes (no longer) their ideas and initiatives.

Luncheon Series June 4 - Hydrogen, sustainable energy of the future?

Hydrogen, sustainable energy
of the future?

Renewable energy is at the forefront of the economic
and political debate. It is seen by many as the primary sector to boost the
revival of the economy, the solution to climate heating, the answer to the
depletion of fossile fuel reserves and the way towards less political
dependency.

We have the privilege
to receive Dr. Vandenborre as our next Chicago luncheon speaker. He will address
the potential of Hydrogen as the sustainable energy of the future. Dr.
Vandenborre is one of the world authorities in this field. He is founder and CEO
of V-Energy and Board member of several international companies in the field of
Hydrogen. He was Vice Chairman of NASDAQ-listed Hydrogenics (HYGS), Chairman of
TSX-listed Stuart Energy (HHO) and founder of Vandenborre Technologies. He
advised EU Presidents Prodi and Barosso on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, was member
of several advisory committees on Hydrogen, and is frequently asked as speaker
at international conferences. He has over 50 patents on his name.
